About Hamara Baarah
Hamara Baarah, directed by Kamal Chandra and starring Annu Kapoor, Ashwini Kalsekar, Manoj Joshi, Rahul Bagga, and Parth Samthaan, tells a compelling story of family conflict and women’s rights. The film follows Alfia, a courageous young woman, who takes her devout and authoritarian father, Mansoor Ali Khan Sanjiri, to court to help her stepmother terminate a risky pregnancy.
The first half of the movie introduces us to Khan Saab’s family dynamics. Annu Kapoor’s portrayal of Khan Saab, a strict and traditional man with extreme views, is powerful, though his loud performance can be overwhelming. His character’s insistence on following his religious beliefs, even at the risk of his wife’s life, drives the plot forward.
Alfia, played by Aditi Bhatpahri, stands out as the film's strong female lead. She seeks the help of a fiery lawyer, Afreen, played by Ashwini Kalsekar, to challenge her father’s decision. Kalsekar’s performance as the determined prosecutor is impressive and adds depth to the courtroom scenes, which become the focus in the second half of the film.
While the courtroom drama is intense, it sometimes feels repetitive and over-the-top. The film's attempt to balance its message of women empowerment with its dramatic elements doesn’t always succeed. Some characters, like Manoj Joshi’s portrayal of a defence lawyer, come off as unrealistic and exaggerated.
The subplot involving Alfia’s romance with journalist Danish (Parth Samthaan) feels unnecessary and distracts from the main story. The music, composed by Annu Kapoor, is forgettable and doesn’t add much to the overall experience.
Despite these flaws, Hamara Baarah effectively highlights important issues such as toxic patriarchy and women’s rights. The movie’s message is clear, even if it sometimes gets overshadowed by its dramatic approach. It is a film with a strong core theme but could benefit from a more nuanced execution.
In summary, Hamara Baarah is a thought-provoking film with powerful performances, particularly from Aditi Bhatpahri and Ashwini Kalsekar. However, its tendency towards melodrama and some distracting subplots prevent it from being a standout.
