2024 T20 World Cup winner Rishabh Pant has failed to elicit “sympathy” after being dismissed for a duck in the final. The wicket keeper-batsman shared a video documenting his journey from post-accident rehab to the glory in Barbados, only for his recovery to be eclipsed by his score against South Africa.
“Blessed, Humbled & Grateful. God has its [sic] own plan #RP17,” Pant captioned the 28-second clip posted on X, formerly Twitter.
It begins with glimpses from the 26-year-old’s rehab, which included getting back on his feet through a walker and then a cane, climbing stairs, as well as indoor workouts to strengthen his ligaments.
The struggle fades into team India’s post-match celebrations at Kensington Oval, where Pant let his emotions loose while holding the T20 World Cup trophy.
However, the message was lost on his critics, who refused to look past his two-ball zero against the Proteas.
“What was your contribution [to the World Cup win] that you are celebrating?,” read one of the harshest comments on Pant’s post. “You just want sympathy. You got into a fast-driving accident that was your own doing.”
Another suggested his selection itself was a gesture of sympathy. “You played the whole WC on sympathy, else in any sane setup you wouldn't have been in squad,” they wrote.
Pant, who was caught behind by Quinton de Kock, off the bowling of Keshav Maharaj, became the first Indian player to get out for a naught in a T20 World Cup final.
The distinction for the lowest batting figures was previously held by Ajinkya Rahane, who scored three runs in eight balls against Sri Lanka in the 2014 championship game.
As for Pant's best performance, it came against Pakistan, with the left-handed no.3 scoring a crucial 42 in the New York game that Indian won by six runs.
