Mumbai: A 65-year-old man, involved in the 1993 Mumbai riots, was arrested after being on the run for 31 years. The police identified the accused as Sayyad Nadir Shah Abbas Khan, who was apprehended in the Sewri area by a team from Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg Police Station.
He was named as an accused in a case of attempt to murder and unlawful assembly during the riots in the city that followed the demolition of the Babri Masjid in December 1992. Khan was arrested by police but never attended the court after obtaining bail, a PTI report said.
The police said that the court then declared Khan as a wanted accused and issued a non-bailable warrant against him. Police visited his home in Sewri in central Mumbai several times, but he remained untraceable. The cops finally got a breakthrough in the case about his whereabouts by examining the mobile phone records of his relatives.
Officials of Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg Police Station on June 29 got information that Khan was going to visit his home, after which a trap was planned, and he was nabbed. Officials informed that Khan has been re-arrested in the 1993 Mumbai riots and further investigation is on, the PTI report added.
