Chennai: The Customs department here seized 12.095 kilograms of gold worth Rs 7.58 crores from 10 passengers arriving from Dubai and Abu Dhabi On June 24. The action was taken on information from DRI's Air Intelligence Unit. All passengers have been detained and Chennai Customs is conducting further investigations.
In another case, The Customs Department reported seizing gold valued at Rs 3.83 crore from an aircraft lavatory, according to an official statement. During an inspection of a flight arriving from Mumbai, officials discovered an unclaimed black rubber piece. Suspecting it contained gold, the officials located it in the rear lavatory of the aircraft.
According to the statement issued by the customs department, officers recovered six gold bars weighing 5.9 kg, with a tariff value of Rs 3.83 crore. The department seized the recovered gold based on the belief that it was illegally imported into India with the intent to smuggle it without paying customs duty.
