Chennai: The capital of Tamil Nadu, Chennai, has recorded its highest rainfall in June in the past two decades. With three days left in the month, Nungambakkam has already received 22.5 cm of rain, significantly higher than its monthly average of 6 cm. The previous high was 21 cm in June 2023, but the all-time record remains 70 cm, set in June 1996 due to a cyclonic storm.
Similarly, Meenambakkam has received 27.4 cm of rain this June, far exceeding its monthly average of 7 cm. The weather station recorded 41 cm in June 1996.
According to officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chennai might continue to see evening thunderstorms until Friday. This June could become one of the wettest in the past sixty years for the city.
Statewide, most districts have reported surplus rainfall. Tamil Nadu has received an overall rainfall of 10.3 cm so far this month, against an average of 4.5 cm. Rainfall is expected to continue in some parts of the state until July 2, keeping day temperatures near normal, as per The Hindu.
Heavy rain is predicted for parts of the Western Ghats districts on Thursday. Weather systems over the region and convective thunderstorms during the southwest monsoon have contributed to the excess rainfall. Strong westerly winds also triggered rain in the Western Ghats this week.
S. Balachandran, Additional Director-General of Meteorology, Chennai, mentioned that the southwest monsoon, active over Kerala, has also influenced the heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats. On Wednesday, areas like Valparai and Coimbatore; Lower Kothaiyar in Kanyakumari; and Kanyakumari district received 3 cm, 5 cm, and 2 cm of rain respectively between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
