Bengaluru: A criminal escaped from police custody after his aides waylaid a police team and attacked them in Karnataka's Gadag on Friday. Four policemen were injured in the attack and the vehicle used by the police officers were also damaged, officials said.
Amjad Ali was being transported to Gangavathi police station when the attack took place. Ali's aides intercepted the police vehicle near Gadag railway underbridge and attacked the cops before taking away the accused. The incident took place under Betageri police station limits in Gadag.
"The Gangavati Shahara police had come here to take an accused into custody in connection with a crime. They picked him up and left from there after which the cops were attacked by the accused's gang. They also broke open the window panes of the vehicle. Then they managed to escape along with the accused. Police have suffered minor injuries. On the basis of their complaint we will take action against all the accused according to law," SP Gadag Nyama Gouda said.
It is not clear how the miscreants got wind of the accused's transfer.
Accused Amjad Ali, who is a resident of SM Krishna Colony in Gadag, was wanted by the Gangavathi police in a different case.
The injured police personnel have been identified as ASI Shivasharana Gowda, Constable, Mylarappa Sompura, Havaldar Marigowda Hosamani and car driver Sharanappa Thimmanagouda.
