Pune: A woman and four children are feared to have drowned at a waterfall in Pune's Lonavala area, said police officials. Upon receiving the information, the police reached the spot and launched a rescue operation, according to the news agency PTI. Pune is currently experiencing heavy rainfall, making all water bodies risky.
The incident took place at 12:30 pm when a family was out for a picnic at the scenic spot. The bodies of Shahista Ansari (36), Amima Ansari (13) and Umera Ansari (8) were fished out, while Adnan Ansari (4) and Maria Sayyad (9) are still missing, reported PTI.
Notably, Lonavala's high-speed water streams are notorious for such casualties of tourists annually.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the city till July 1. According to the meteorological office, the city is expected to receive light to moderate rainfall during that time. This follows a period of reduced monsoon activity after heavy rainfall earlier in June.
